An Ambivalent Woman of 37

In 2018, Emma Sandall encountered Sheila Heti's novel 'Motherhood,' finding a profound resonance in its narrative, particularly in its intimate exploration of a woman's relationship with her body and the weighty decision of motherhood. Feeling an immediate kinship with the story's emotional depth, Emma embarked on a transformative journey to translate its essence into a captivating dance theater piece. Over the past four years, Emma dedicated herself to refining and shaping the production, workshopping it across diverse artistic landscapes in New York, Nashville, and Sydney. Collaborating with a spectrum of talented artists—dancers, musicians, actors, and writers—the play evolved through various iterations. Finally, in 2023, after a creative odyssey, 'Motherhood' found its definitive form—a compelling cabaret-style physical theater adorned with integrated projections. This culmination represents the culmination of years of exploration, crafting a powerful, evocative narrative that resonates deeply with the complexities of womanhood, existential questions, and the enigmatic pull of generational legacies.
